Shire opens global sales operation near Nyon
Shire, one of the world’s most thriving specialty pharmaceuticals companies and expert in protein-based treatments for rare diseases, have set up a global sales operation near Nyon. According to the management of the 3 billion dollars turnover company, Switzerland is now strategic to its expansion. The group is opening an office in Eysins (VD), this autumn. ”Switzerland provides access to qualified workforce, an exceptional quality of life that is appealing to our employees, and a fair economic environment,” says Theresa Heggie, Unit Manager in Eysins.
Shire has grown rapidly since its acquistion in 2005 of Transkaryotic Therapies Inc in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a move that took it into rare diseases. While it had operations in only nine countries in 2004, Shire has since expanded into 28 nations. The company, listed on the London and NASDAQ stock exchanges, is aiming to market its treatments worldwide, where they are needed and can be reimbursed. In the coming years, the group intends to expand to South America, the Asia-Pacific region and Eastern Europe.
Dublin-based Shire has been recruiting in Switzerland since June, looking for sixty employees to take up posts at the opening of the new unit. Some of the staff will be transferring from US and UK offices. By late 2011, the workforce should reach 150. The new subsidiary will be the heart of the company’s global sales operation. In terms of logistics, Switzerland is attractive because it allows better time difference management between South and North America, and Asia.
