MEMS GYROSCOPES MAKE YOU DIZZY
2010 saw the unstoppable ascent of a new MEMS device in the consumer electronic market: the gyroscope. This new component paved the way to new applications in many mobile phones and gaming platforms under spotlights, shortly becoming a must-have component when it comes to sensor clusters. The MEMS gyroscope market is now worth close to 400 million USD, with an expected year-over-year growth higher than 20% according to iSuppli.
ST Microelectronics (Geneva) announced in early 2010 the first 3-axis MEMS gyroscope (photo) in the market based on a single monolithic driving mass, and today the company reaps the rewards of an early bet: ST was the first to believe in the high penetration of this component in everyday-use devices, driven by the high level of miniaturization and affordable cost.
