Madoff: The name says it all

A four hour mini-series which follows the exploits of the Manhattan private fund manager, Bernard Lawrence ‘Bernie’ Madoff, premiered on US television last week.

The title of the series is Madoff, which, as any good student of English would know, pretty much sums up the whole sordid story.

It begs the question: How in your right mind could you invest your millions with a man who carries the name Madoff?

For those a bit confused let me explain:

The phrasal verb or expression ‘to make off with' is defined as follows:

to snatch or steal: made off with the profits, carry (something) away illicitly, to escape with something, especially something stolen

The past tense of make off is made off. So this sentence - Bernie Madoff made off with billions - not so much stutters along, but tells the absolute and perfect truth.

Madoff made off with as much as $65 billion. Investigators have since recovered a paltry $11 million and Madoff is serving a 150 year sentence in prison.

Richard Dreyfuss (below), a Hollwood veteran of films such as American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Down and Out in Beverly Hills and The Goodbye Girl plays Madoff.

Critics have praised his high-energy, motor-mouthed performance, but generally the series has been described as a bit messy. The drama excels in the scenes where Madoff reveals to his family and his clients that “it’s one big lie”. Ouch!

You can watch the trailer and an excerpt from the mini-series here.
